When I compare the Domiminican Republic to Brazil and Colombia, one thing that really stands out is this: about 15% of the country is presently residing in the United States.
A few points to note:
- nearly ALL of the Dominican women here whom I’ve dated have one (and often times more than just one) family member who is presently living in the United States,
- Western Union money transfer outlet stores litter the landscape here: they are everywhere (family member obviously sending cash back from the states)
- most young Dominicans dress “New York” style
If the US were a highway, the DR would be an attached back alley. This analogy could be taken a step further to accurately describe their thinking of themselves: we all would prefer to be on the express way, we’re not really driving on a proper road. We’re in the shallow end of “real life” seems to be the thinking of some of them. There is very little thinking that their own country will become a regular highway. If you really want to get somewhere, you’ve got to find a way onto the interstate.
